I'm so stuck on whether to get a 2017 13 inch MacBook pro with or without touchbar(8gb ram 256 ssd)or get a 13 inch 2016 touchbar with 16gb ram 256 ssd. Id probably be doing some light video editing. Some 4k. and college work.

4k file sizes means you have to live with external hdd's probably unless you're good at file management :) 'personally I don't think the touch bar thing is a major dealbreaker, but not having enough space and ram would be....so my suggestion is try and look everywhere u can for a good deal on something with 16gb ram 500gb ssd, it'll pay itself back if you decide to sell it with those specs anyway, cause the more stock specks are everywhere, so more future proof option also...So mayb a 2016 13" 16 500 refurb/used with some apple care still left on it for comfort :) edit: I'd even say go as high as 1tb or 2tb if you can afford it...It looks so much better on paper a few years from now when you're selling a 2.9 or 3.1 ghz 1/2tb ssd laptop than one with 8gb/256, and I know you can do lots with cloud storage as well, so for some it's not a must, but "offline" file management wise you'll quickly run out of space with 256.

I would go for the 16GB ram personally, at least if you plan to keep it for a while.

I got a 2016 Macbook Pro last October, when I found one on sale. Very happy with it. No video editing but usually run 16 apps at the same time and also do photo editing. It's smooth.

I never use the touch bar. Personally I think it’s useless. I’ve also had more glitches and random restarts with the touch bar model than any other mbp I’ve ever owned.

Get the 2017 (instead of the 2016).
Supposedly a slightly better keyboard.

AND -- you want to get AppleCare for it, if you can.
What happens if you start having keyboard problems when the 1-year warranty period is over?

Thanks for the advice. I've decided to get the 2017 ntb 8gb ram 256ssd.

Do yourself a favour and get 16gb ram. remember, the ram gets shared with the integrated gpu - even 16gb is not much if you edit 4k then.

Just save a little and get the 2017 with 16gb of ram.
