If I were to buy a back panel from Apple through their retail store am I able to buy it outright for the $29 or would I have to technically have a broken phone in order to buy one?

Reason I'm asking is when the white iPhone comes out I want to pick up just the white back, and maybe an extra black if I have the money.

Just wanted to see how Apple handled the replacement backs for the phone or what their policy is on obtaining one.

Unless you have an insider at an Apple store, they're not going to sell you a back plate by itself. Pretty sure those are only for repair issues and not for retail sale. There are dozens of sites that sell OEM-like back plates for your phone that will be cheaper although the quality may be hit or miss. I got one from SW-box.com and it looks okay and was only $20.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8H7 Safari/6533.18.5)

No they won't allow it. You can but them from ifixit or iresq though both sell official apple parts. Why do you need a spare back anyway, who cares if it gets scratched up a bit its just a phone??

I want to replace my friends back glass that is broken, how easy is it to replace? From the iFixit.com site it seems like 2 screws and then it just slides off?

That is it. It took me less than 2 minutes yesterday to change the back glass on my friend Iphone 4 yesterday. He ordered the back glass on ebay for $9.98 including shipping and it fits like OEM part.
