What's the official Apple policy on buying a model that gets updated within a certain time period?

I have heard that if you purchase a computer that receives an update within 14 days, then you can call and receive some sort of compensation. However, if you bought a BTO machine, then you might be out of luck trying to get compensated.

What is the compensation? I've heard/read that some people get store credit, while others receive the updated unit.

I'm planning on ordering an iMac, but I'm kind of hesitant spending such a large amount of money without knowing the implications of such issues. Still searching the Apple page:)
