Buying a iPhone at Apple Store?

So, im planing on getting the iPhone 4s/5 or whatever its gonna be called. How does it work? When i upgraded to my iPhone 4, i did it online through AT&T. At the apple store will they ask for the person the AT&T accounts under? I plan on going to line up but the account is under my moms name, would she need to go too or is it not necessary? Also how do they know im available for an upgrade? One more question... i also plan on getting one for my sister.... does she also need to be present? or can i just have her give me her account information? All help is appreciated
