I'll be getting a MBA for my father soon.
13" display is non-negotiable, but I still haven't figured out the SSD, whether to shell the extra 300$ for 256GB.

He'll be using it mainly for surfing, mail, photos he takes and checking PPT and occasional small videos sent by friends.
Office will be installed but he writes about 20 letters per year, excel usage will be minimal. Just checking a few tables from time to time.
He has an iphone5 & ipad2 with normal sized itunes libraries. No music, no videos or navigation.

I'm thinking a 128GB would fit the bill and if he needs more space in time, I can get a bigger SSD from OWC.

Do you think he can get by with a 128GB or should I go ahead and buy the 256?

All inputs will be most appreciated.

I got the 256GB SSD as that was what I wanted.

I would definitely upgrade from 4 to 8GB. The processor would be another thing you might upgrade as well. On the 13" model, going to an i7 means you are upgrading to 256GB SSD.

Personally I think 256GB is a must for even a light user...The smaller drive just isn't enough IMO. I doubt that your Dad would need the CPU hike, but 8GB is also a wise upgrade as posted above.

I think the father will do alright with the default storage option. The father could always use an external HD for storing the family pictures. The father could listen to music with aoitsukinosuke-san  じゃね〜

Get the 128. Prices are trending lower on SS storage so if he needs it later you can upgrade then cheaper. Use the savings to get TimeCapsule to ensure his files are automatically archived.

Based on your OP about the use case scenarios, your father will definitely be fine with the 128. More than fine. Don't fret over it anymore than you need to. Macbook Air is a nice present :).

Everybody who took the time to share their opinions - Thank you so much.
The verdict is obvious. 128GB it is.
God, I love this forum and my forummates.
Y'all be safe and stay cool!! :)
