Basically, I am buying a Macbook Pro off of my friend and want to get SOME of the things from my iMac onto it, such as Final Cut Pro, documents, music and such. I dont want to transfer everything because I would like to keep my new computer cleaner and not as cluttered as my iMac.

What would be my best route?

Connect the two with an Ethernet cable directly. They will show up on eachothers shared area or network are (depending on your OS versions)

you can simply click on either mac and connect with your username/password and mount the hard disk of the given mac and simply copy the stuff over.

As far as FinalCut, you may need to just reinstall that.
