Hi all,

My dad has had Apples and Macs his whole life. He is NOT a power user but for his needs, pretty good. He does email, messages, facetime, all he wants on the web etc.

He in general is suspicious of tech (no cellphone) but has gotten to like his Apple TV. He ADORES audiobooks (audible) and his ipod (did not want a touch but I had to get an older iPod (clickwheel). In the last year I was able to get him to use an ancient iPad (I think 3) with the audible app. He doesn't click around too much but he knows the basics from starting/stopping some stuff I've asked him to do on mine (in other apps) etc.

His main computer is an iMac with a second screen, but he has had access to an old macbook air of mine when he occasionally travels for a couple of weeks. As long as he has an external mouse he is fine with that. The macbook air has died and he needs a new setup.

I'm toying with upgrading him on two fronts. Go all out (overkill) and get a 12 inch iPad pro (maybe last years model?) so he gets the excellent speakers for watching some shows, audible etc. Maybe get him to use some simple apps (NYT, the Athletic, ESPN , etc) for his everyday use and for travel get him the new fancy apple keyboard. I know it is a bit more expensive and heavier than just getting a laptop that waits around for the minimum travel he does but I thought he might get more use out of this hybrid setup.

My question is how have people liked the iPad pro as a daily device? Esp maybe older people (or your parents)? Is it too big and cumbersome? It wouldn't leave the house, so portability isn't as much as an issue. I'm more concerned with convenience and size/weight issues. Again he would have an iMac for longer emails etc. This would be more a consuming device. Read in bed, listen to stories. Maybe read/watch something in the dining room or look at some scores while watching TV.

Also those that have made the switch. Do you feel for web browsing, imessaging, a couple of emails and watching some shows is just as seamless on the ipad as it is on the macbook? Is there an unexpected learning curve? Likes/Dislikes of the set up?

Those are the thoughts I had. Another option, would be 2 devices being a basic iPad and macbook air. Do you feel that would be the better fit?

Thanks for any and all insights,

Philly

As a 2018 12.9 with Magic Keyboard user, I'd recommend this route for the needs you've described. It's simple and easy to use. I do lots of long emails with this setup, so no need for a Mac too unless that's his preference. The size and weight are very comfortable. I would recommend getting a skin (such as DBrand or Sopiguard) to put on the Magic Keyboard to help it stay clean and protect it.

I think an iPad and a Macbook Air would be overkill for the use case you've described.

You can get a like-new 2018 12.9 iPad Pro 64GB Wi-Fi in the Apple Refurb Store for $699. It comes with Apple's one-year warranty and the option to buy Applecare. It includes all of the accessories too. That model isn't in the Refurb Store at the moment, but the stock changes often so it may be worth your while to check back frequently.

My prediction is that he's going to have trouble with an iPad.

If he "knows the Mac", KEEP him "with the Mac".

Things will just go easier that way...

I think I'll try the iPad Pro route, if that fails I'll just end up with it ;-) !
Another important factor might be screensharing... I've been able to use the feature through either teamviewer or through Apple Desktop Remote. that is an underappreciated and NOT NEARLY published enough feature of messages/overall system use.

I haven't ever looked into if one can screen share an ipad but I sort of doubt it...

Thanks for the input.

Philly

PS: @Fishrrman you are right, it would be easier BUT I'm a sucker ;-)
