Hey all

Im finally gona make a switch to mac soon! :D
I was wondering what to go for though.
Its basicly between MBP or iMac.

I travel about 8 times a year and thats why i would prefer to go for MBP and i would want to know how it runs on a 20" screen.
Does it slowdown the performance since it projects on a bigger screen?
Can you even play a game? (maybe COD4?) or at least half-life 2.

Also is there like a cooling pad/stand so i can hook it up to so it cools down and acts like a desktop? Maybe put it next to my feet....

If a MBP runs fine like this then i wouldnt bother looking into iMac.

What do you guys reckon?
MBP 17" with 20" external monitor

Or iMac which satisfies my needs and just suffer when i travel ?

P.S would a 17" work better than a 15.4" on an external?

I use a 20" external screen with a 17" MBP all the time. In my case I have the high-res version of the MBP, so the external screen is actually lower resolution than the inbuilt one.

Works like a dream - go for it!

Go for the MBP with the external monitor. The size of the MBP really doesn't matter for the external screen, I've found.

You won't want to part with it when you travel so go for the MBP ;)

I've played command and conquer 3 on my 24" external off my orig. Core Duo MBP without any issues.

As for cooling, I keep my MBP on a griffin elevator when it's hooked up to my monitor. keeps it a few inches off the ground and allows it to cool off better.

WoW!!! never thought i would get such +ve results! :D wwwoooo

So you guys say that it compares to an iMac with the external monitor? (lets say specs were the same)

How about playing games? Anyone tried that?

Does it run crazy hot and noisey though? or is it that same?

MBP+External 20 inch= roughly $5000

iMac=roughly $2000

just something to keep in mind.

Thanks mate...Its gona be in pounds :(
I've been saving up for 1year now so im gona get a full spec MBP. External is gona have to wait 6months but im cool with that :D

Thanks bud for the advice! :)

Could you put it on a descent setting? Its not really a demanding game but at least i got 1 respnonse for my game question lol

Im worried about it overheating! Im a student so its gona cost me £50 for the applecare. My current pc has switched off so many times that my grphx card had to be changed! overheated.

Worrying that will happen to my mac
