I was looking at a new mb 2.4 for roughly $1500 dollars then found the 17 inch mbp (early 2008 ed refurb from the apple store) 2.5 ghz for $1899. This seems like a much better deal. Is my thinking flawed? The computer will be a multipurpose family computer (photos, video, gaming etc.) Were there any major flaws with this version?

Thank you in advance.

MBP or MB?

Hi there!
I would personally go for the MBP. You're saying that this will be the computer for all of your family so spending a little extra will be well worth it. Bigger screen for one.
I personally got one of these fantastic babies, haven't had (touch wood) any problems so far, so go for it!!

Refurb. It's a great computer. You won't be disappointed. Especially with the screen size based on your use of it.

I've had a number of refurb macs, never had an issue with the refurb ones - only had issues with the new ones (go figure) - I always get Applecare for piece of mind. My G4 powerbook was replaced with a refurb after I had some issues - I got a processor upgrade with the refurb, cost to me - $0 since I had applecare.

Refurb MBP, they are a great computer, and come with Apple's warranty and the glory of a superb screen. I have a MBP and it is the best computer I have ever owned. Get Applecare and you should be fine.

Cheers and good luck
