Buying an inexpensive Ink Jet

I have a G4 with OS 10.3.9 and, as a writer, use a laser printer for most of my work. However, I also do design work and need the use of an inexpensive color ink jet. Recently, I purchased a Canon Pixma 210 and was very unhappy with how it printed. Copy and scan functions are all right, but printing is terrible which surprised me because I've always done well with Canon. Any suggestions?
