Is the SIM unlocked version the same as the Verizon in that both have the CDMA radio? My wife uses Sprint right now but we want a "world" phone just in case she switches carriers.

There hasn't been a seperate iPhone since the X I believe. Even still, it's always best to get Sim Unlocked.
The X had two different models. The Xs is when they started releasing just one all around.

They used to be - until Verizon changed their policy a year or so ago. They've been locking them for the first 60 days I believe.I believe Verizon's phones are sold unlocked.
