Is the SIM unlocked version the same as the Verizon in that both have the CDMA radio? My wife uses Sprint right now but we want a "world" phone just in case she switches carriers.

I got SIM free and can use it on Verizon fine.
 
There hasn't been a seperate iPhone since the X I believe. Even still, it's always best to get Sim Unlocked.
 
All iPhones are "world" phones.

Well, if unlocked you can use them around the world. But there are different models for different markets. It looks like 3 models this year for the 11. The US model, which superficially looks like the Chinese model (except the Chinese one supports 2 physical SIMS). And the world model (which doesn't support CDMA or B14 (ATT) or B71 (T-Mobile).
