Hi.

I'm completely new to this forum, so my appologies if this question has been asked a lot before (which I'm sure it has, although I couldn't find anything through the search function).

Here in Norway, iPhones are only sold through companies that import and unlock them, which therefore becomes quite expensive. However, my dad is travelling to Florida on vacation in a week, so I'm thinking about asking him to buy one for me there.

I've read articles on how to unlock, and know people that can help me as well. However, is there anything I need to keep in mind while buying it in the US? Do I have to sign up for this AT&T deal regardless, and does this mean that I will have to pay fees for those 2 years (or whatever it is) even when unlocking it thus using a different (Norwegian) phone company?

I'm curious about this. I know a lot of iPhones are imported, what do people do about the AT&T deal?

I don't want my dad to run into any problems while picking up this phone for me, so it would be nice to know a little about this. Also, of course, I don't want to break the law or end up with two phone bills. So any advice/info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much,

Karl

Hey Karl:

Hope your father has a safe trip, and a lot of fun.

All he needs to do is go into an ATT or Apple store, tell them he wants a 16 G iPhone, pay and leave- that is it. No sign up, no contract, nada. If anyone gives him a hard time, he just says it is a gift (which it sounds like it may be, after a fashion).

Enjoy it buddy!

Dave

Thanks for the replies. So then I just have to unlock the phone here in Norway and stick in my old sim card, and I'm ready to go? That's awesome! :D

Anybody know what a 16GB iPhone should cost in the state of Florida, and where to get the best deal?

God I'm so excited :)

16gb iPhone is $499 USD-- I am not sure what the state tax is in Florida

But the $499 includes tax or what? Anyway that's SO cheap considering the weak dollar... It's like the same as i paid for my iPod mini here in Norway a few years ago... thanks a lot guys! :D

Where in Florida is your dad going??
Tax is 6% in most counties but if he'll be in Miami-Dade then it's 7%.
It doesn't really make that much difference though.

Hopefully the weather will hold up for him!! It has been raining soo much lately. =/

Oh, that's a shame. I have no idea where he's going, but he's bringing my younger brother and his girlfriend so I'm sure they'll visit Disneyland and all that stuff. Suckers, not taking me with them. Actually I think they deserve the rain :p

Another iPhone buyer from Norway!

Hi Forum!

My first post also, a friend of mine is in the USA atm, and I have asked him to buy a iPhone 8Gb for me. He is currently in Washington DC, and he is going to San Francisco in a couple of days.. Just wondering where the tax is lowest, DC or SF.. :)

Best Regards from Norway!

Can't you just go into the US Apple Store Online, make a cart and type in the zip code of the area and it gives you the exact price?? Works for me. :D

Hey thanks! It worked, I only had some problems to find the right zip codes.

:)
