buying computer overseas?

Hi,
I know someone who is planning to go to the US later this year, and is thinking of buying an iBook soon also.
Is it worth buying a computer in the US and bringing it back to Australia? Has anyone here done something like this before?

Just for reference, a base model iBook in Aus costs $2195, and in the US it costs $999(US), which converts to $1688(Australian).

I know it would need a different power adapter, what else would it need?
Is it worth doing, or more trouble than it's worth?

I, too, would like some feedback on this subject as I'll be going to the States a bit later this year and am not particularly 'thrilled' with the prices of Macs here in Australia.
