I just bought a new MBPr for travel and was shopping for a portable external HD. Suddenly my existing WD external HD for my Mac Pro apparently is corrupted, just got an error message on startup that disk utility cannot repair the drive, and that it appears to be read only. (I disconnected the drive & reconnected, launched disk utility, and it says cannot be repaired and must be reformatted.)
Does this happen often? WD 2.0 TB drive is only 1.5 years old. Do I need to reformat it, or should I try something else first?
If so I need to set up another external drive to back up time machine on Mac Pro before reformatting the WD. I had planned to buy a USB 3.0 portable drive for the MBPr, but my MacPro early 2008 does not have 3.0. So thinking of getting a firewire 800 portable drive, back up Time Machine to that on Mac Pro and reformat WD drive if necessary (then use portable for the MBPr). Is that a good strategy?
I was looking at OWC Mercury on-the-go bus powered portable, which has both FW800 & USB 3.0. Seems like that would get me thru this situation and be a good drive for the MBPr. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
