What is the best way to buy an item from a member of this group who advertizes the item on MacRumors? Ethics, procedure etc.?

Make sure they have a decent post count, then make sure they can provide legitamate pictures of the item for sale, once this sis done PM them with an offer and mode of payment, also organise how the item is to be sent or picked up,
Most macrumors marketplace deals go well, but its not always the case so be careful,

There are no guarantees, but in addition to what shadowmoses suggests, you can search for previous Marketplace posts by the other party, and see if they bought or sold items before, and if there was feedback posted in the thread by the other member. You can even send Private Messages to members they have done business with to ask how it went.

A willingness to answer questions in a straightforward manner is also a good sign.
