Hello there!

I'm very tempted to purchase a 2006 (2.66 quad core xeon) mac pro instead of a 2008 macbook pro.

I'm an Architecture student and will be using CS3 and C4D/modo type apps.

Does this sound wise?

The only setback i forsee is that the RAM runs at 666mHz. I need not portability but power and stability.

Muchas gracias

If portability is not an issue and you can have both at about the same price, the Mac Pro makes more sense, as your render times will improve with a quad-core.

A GPU upgrade for the Pro might be a good investment as well, as CS4 can utilize the abilities of a decent graphics card.

cheers-

is an old mac pro gonna be faster than a new imac too? that's another option... but maybe less future proof :)

I wouldn't bother with the iMac. The ability to upgrade the internals alone is adequate reason. :)
