Buying games

What's the best way to go about buying games or apps for the iphone?
Do I buy them with itunes and then synch them to the iphone later on or do I need to connect the iphone to itunes first then buy the games/apps and have them go directly into the iphone?
Can the same games be played or the apps be run on my Mac or just on the iphone?

ummm they are games for the iphone/ipod touch why would you think you could play them on your mac. are you going to tilt your computer around?
