I have been advised here that I can't buy online in the US with my foreign credit card, which is a huge hassle as I'll be living in the US as of July!

So can I go into an Apple store and buy stuff with my Australian card, then?

Yes, my dad bought something in the Apple store with a British credit card when he was here last month. As long as it's Visa/Mastercard/American Express it shouldn't matter.

Excellent. Thanks!

Rather than create another thread, does anyone know how swamped Apple stores tend to get on tax holiday days? There's one in my state a few days after I arrive.

Unfortunately, very swamped, at least at my closest Apple store.

I think if they are out of the computer (at the store) that you want, they'll take an order, and have Apple HQ send it out within a few days. I think the order is tax free, but don't quote me on that, just what I remember a friend telling me.
