Buying iphone on ebay + customs fee?

Hey guys,

I'm considering getting an iPhone through ebay, but I was wondering, if it was shipped from, say, Canada to US - would I have to pay any customs fee or anything like that?

Also, is there a way of checking if it is really factory unlocked other than actually plugging it in and all that?
