I'm looking for an iPhone 16 base model on the UK eBay site to keep for 5+ years.

I find out after messaging many sellers that they’re offering phones as 'UK carrier upgrades’ with good discounts. I'm unsure about the legality of selling such phones.

Some of the sellers have very good eBay feedback but can't provide receipts. This lack of proof of purchase raises further concerns.

My understanding is that these phones are still technically owned by the UK carrier until the full (for example 24 month financed) payment is made. This could lead to potential issues like blacklisting if the seller defaults on their payments.

Oh, there's also the different scenario where sellers upon messaging say the iPhone is an "unwanted gift" and can't provide a receipt which raises red flags.

Question: Has anybody any experience of buying a UK carrier upgrade iPhone off eBay or know of the potential risks for buyers?
