Buying my friend's iphone

So I am buying my friends iphone off of him this weekend, and he has the extended applecare with it. 2 questions:
1. How would I go about switching applecare under his name to my name?
2. How would I go about getting a new battery without activating the fone?
I plan on unlocking it, once I get his fone. I want to get his iphone replaced, so that I have a fresh new battery, before I unlock it because once it's unlocked and the battery craps out on me, I'm screwed.

Have your friend write you a receipt, with the serial number of the phone on it.

Before you unlock it, obviously, bring the phone and the receipt to the store to have them send it in to get a new battery put in.

It'll be a little easier since Apple knows people will be selling their old phones to people so they will be already activated, but not necessarily attached to an account yet.

Hopefully, Apple won't make you activate it to your own AT&T account, as you are not really getting warranty service for it.
