if i purchase a new iPod from an auction site from an individual who says it's brand new does the warranty period begin from when they bought it in most cases. are there stores on there selling new ones where the warranty would start when i buy it?

The warranty period starts when the unit is first purchased. It does not get reset when the item is resold. If you want the warranty to begin when you purchase it, buy from Apple or an authorized reseller like Amazon or Best Buy.

so if an ebay seller is telling me it comes with a one year warranty...might he be an authorized seller...or does he likely mean it came with a one year warranty when he purchased it? do authorized sellers use ebay?

I'm always wary of eBay. If you want to verify the warranty status of any Mac, get the serial number from the seller and enter it here.
