Buying off-contract phone from T-Mobile but...

I'm on AT&T and I want to get either the Nexus S or the G2 (haven't decided yet) but I was wondering if I could just walk into a T-Mobile store and pay for the phone off-contract, without already having a contract or needing to have an account?

Possibly, but the only way is to ask them. T-Mobile uses a different frequency for the 3G stuff, so if you get a Nexus S with the idea of staying on AT&T, you'll only be able to use it on edge.

Well yeah, I did that with the Nexus One, ran it only on EDGE, wasn't too bad.
