If you buy an open box, check the s/n on apple care site for coverage. If you see that it was registered months ago call APPLE CARE and tell them there is a mistake with coverage start date but don't tell them you bought it open box. APPLE CARE doesn't allow for refreshing coverage start date on open box purchases even though BEST BUY will tell you BS and say they will take care of it for you. They won't. Basically apple rep over phone will ask you to email the receipt so he/she can adjust it. Be ready by computer and stay with hem on the line with receipt copy ready. Send them the email copy right away while you are still on phone.

Apple rebuilt my whole mac 6 months after apple care 3 year warranty expired because I was very patient, honest up front, polite and thankful. Genius even told me they usually hear demands and tantrums from unhappy customers so he was on my side to help me as much as possible. You are not entitled to anything and you aren't always right.
