Going to buy one tonight. Is there anything in particular I should look to test or look at closely? It's still got warranty for another few months, but I know not all things are covered.

This list comes quickly to my mind.

Boot up the Mac
Double check the specs via the system profile
Look for scratches/dents in the case.
Check out the keyboard, i.e., keys work etc.
play a song to test the speakers.

The 2013 came out in June, so you should have at least 8 month left of warranty.

There is an AXXX model number etched on the back cover that uniquely identifies the laptop.

If he has original packaging + paperwork then it's all legit, not stolen.

all things should be covered that were originally covered.

count the mics - make sure there are two. and do what maflynn said.

you can also do things like check the battery cycles etc but honestly this machine should be like new given that they only came out in June.

Have you asked why he is selling it?

I got it! Did all the kinda basic checks... It's actually brand new. The chap works in distribution and gets cheap overstock. So it looks to have been a shop model or something. Had 1 battery cycle and is immaculate. Very happy! Really nice computer!

Sounds like a good deal, yet I'd like to find legal cheap overstock discounts on a current model

Sounds hot to me. I doubt a 2013 MBA is an "overstock" that they couldn't sell. They probably got an extra one shipped to them that was unaccounted for somehow and this fella thought he'd take advantage of the situation...

Hot inventory has serial numbers embedded that are directly tied to a MAC address and ARE shared with Apple every-time they check for updates.
Smart thieves sell the hot merchandise and then take those profits to purchase legally. This way they never have to worry about getting caught using it.
To me if its not a legitimate place of business that deals with such wares, I don't care how great of a deal it is.
I enjoy sleeping in my own bed and enjoy the view through windows without bars ;)

The question I have is, has the OP tried to register it yet at Apple's registration web site. If that goes well, the OP is golden.

I doubt it tbh... The guy had stacks of all sorts of tech. Unless it's a massive operation, i doubt it is. Plus, he looked like one of my old lecturers.

And yeah, I registered it while at his house picking it. He wanted to show me it working and I set it up there.

it's never the ones you think :p
congrats on your new computer!
