Any pointers for checking Macs for problems? (Such as overheating, hardware defects, etc.; this would be my first mac so idk the operating system that well)

The one I'm looking at includes applecare, would that cover any issues that could come up?

If you have any hesitations then go with a refurb one from Apple or from a certified reseller.
