I'm a relative newbie with my MacBook Pro but have been a little disappointed
with trying to use my iphoto 09. I have all my photos concurrently loaded into Picasa but even that is somewhat restricted due to the copying from iphoto. I had read on a photo site that some people simply bypass iphoto and download directly into another application. Any idea how do I do that?

Go to your applications folder and open Image Capture - you can use this to download pics and save them wherever you want (or if you have a newer MBP you can just stick the SD card in and do the same thing). Then you can open the pics in whatever program you want.
