It depends on what monitor you're talking about since there is a myriad of ways to connect.

it's an HP

Is it Dual Link DVI? If it is 24" It will be single link, so this will suffice.

You can get the Apple one, it's around $30, but does the same function.

What is your HP model? It might have a DisplayPort so you just get a miniDP to DP.

We need to know what kind of connection is on the monitor you want to use.
