Cable for Macbook Pro to iMac

I have a late 2009 27" iMac (imac10,1) that has a Mini DisplayPort and I would like to use it as an external monitor for my Mid 2012 Macbook pro which has a Thunderbolt port. What cable should I use to connect them, a Mini DisplayPort or the more expensive Thunderbolt.
