I was looking forward to the new 3.0 software update with CalDAV support as this could have been the answer I was looking for at work.
We have an iCal server and have recently implemented correctly from a bad installation and can use all the functions of it. Having this on the iPhone would have been the next step.
However the CalDAV support on the iPhone is poor. The only thing I have found it that you can download your calendar and it will show you info about events in the calendar. However when you create an event on the CalDAV calendar you can't invite people or book locations and resources. If you are invited to an event you can't see or accept the event on the iPhone, you have to do this in iCal.
I believe this functionality is supported on the iPhone if you have an Exchange server.
It's disappointing that Apple can't keep their own server offering up with Exchange. We'd have better integration with an Exchange server than we do with iCal server.
The LDAP for contacts also does not appear to work very well. At least i've not been able to get it working with our Open Directory. Yet it works in Address Book on Mac OS X.
