I have Ventura 13.4 on my Mac. I'm not sure when exactly I updated (I usually just do it when I get the popup, but it was recently.

In the past, I've always been able to tab between field when creating a calendar event, so I can type in the title, then tab twice to type in the address, tab again to change the date & time, etc.

Recently (I'm assuming this is related to the most recent system update, but am not 100% sure), it will kick me out of the event after almost any change. So I can change the title, but then when I tab to the next field, it exits the event & I have to mouse over to it, double click on it, type in the address (or whatever) and then if I try to change anything else, it kicks me out again & I need to do it all over again. It's much less efficient for me, and I honestly can't think of why they would change this behavior.

Hmm, I'm also running macOS 13.4 Ventura, and I tried creating a calendar event (click and drag on an empty space in the calendar window, and then start typing the title). I couldn't duplicate the issue you described. Tabbing between fields works fine for me. I use the spacebar to select and "open" fields for input.

Some things you could check (just some ideas that came to mind):

  • Have you made any changes recently in the Accessibility settings of System Settings?
  • Are you using a mouse, or are you using the trackpad?
  • What happens when you switch between input devices?
  • What language are you using for text input? (The keyboard may behave differently and apps may react differently in different languages.)
  • Do you have any other text input-related assistive apps that might be interfering with the data entry process, such as TextExpander, Alfred and so on?
Also, note that when you hit the Return key more than once in some fields, the dialog box automatically closes.

Wow! Thanks for the in-depth reply. Fantastic to know that it's working correctly overall.

I'll take a look at those suggestions, I don't use any text input assistive apps, but I'll look into the other tips. Appreciate your time & thanks especially for the video. That's exactly how it used to work, so glad to see that it's not broken overall.

If it's not working for you, then something must be going on otherwise that needs to be dealt with. It could be a bug after all and perhaps it just happens to work on my end because of the combination of settings I'm using. Always hard to say without doing some tweaking and examining the other elements in your system. I only have one machine running Ventura now, with the others running Monterey, so I can't check on any other systems.

One other thing: it sounds like you may have done an in-place upgrade rather than a clean install. Nothing wrong with that, but sometimes upgrades in place can leave or uncover unresolved issues, I've found, due to different components in the new OS architecture not working well with those from the previous OS that remained. Apps you may have installed in the previous OS that could augment or interfere with trackpad or mouse motion and clicks might also be worth examining.

Thanks. What I meant by my last comment was that this wasn't a change in behavior. I had another issue with calendars where I could not create a new one & then start typing in it. Turns out that others had the same issue & it was a new behavior in Calendar. That's what I meant by my last comments. This isn't a new behavior, but something is off on my end.

Doing a clean reinstall is a good idea, as I did just the incremental update. I'll have to give that a shot. Thanks again!
