I'm wondering if there is a way to get my Calendar alerts and reminders to go off and actually let out a sound when I have my phone on silent? I put the phone on silent every night before I go to bed, and my morning alarm still goes off, so I know it is possible for sounds to actually play when the phone is toggled to silent. Is there a setting somewhere that let's you specify which apps can "override" the silent toggle?

No, there is no way to do that.
