Calendar & Mail client Windows 8.1

I recently ordered a Thinkpad with Windows 8.1 for school and I am looking for a desktop app for my calendar appointments and a mail client.

I preferably want something free or highly recommended and affordable. I want two separate apps outlook is too bloated for my liking. It all has to sync with Google.

I may also need an contacts app.

I would love your input. Google only seems to have paid options for email and calendar clients.

I use this (Windows Live Mail) from here http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-live/essentials-other#essentials=overviewother

I prefer it to outlook really and it is free.

From what I read WLM does not seem to play nice with GMail.

I use a gmail address (and a outlook one) and it is fine for both mail and calendar.

Try it - it is free. It isn't like you have to keep using it if you don't like it. I do like it and can't say much more than that.
