I just bought a current-gen 13" Macbook Pro (2.53). I've looked through the manual, but don't see anything about calibrating the battery. Is this something that's still necessary to do with a new machine?

It's only necessary if you want a the battery life indicator to be accurate. Although in my opinion it will be good enough out of the box without calibration.
