Gee, thanks iPhone. I sure hope that building didn't burn down. Good thing it wasn't an armed robbery or a heart attack or anything...

Yeah, no phone has ever dropped a call before the iPhone. If you want to rely on a wireless phone for emergency calls, avoid the iPhone!

If it makes you feel any better, my RAZR dropped a 911 call as well. A little disconcerting, yes, but it could happen to anyone with any phone.

Surely you were able to call back...

Funny! I would say if you need a phone that is more reliable, turn off 3G until everything is sorted out. Historically many PDA's are junky phones and 3G is a newish technology for some. I don't think the wifey has ever dropped a call on her original iPhone, and neither have I using my iPhone 3G on Edge.

No disrespect intended for the OP, but anyone who uses these forums should assume that for now a 3G phone call is a roll of the dice. It shouldn't be that way, but it is.

I agree. On 3G, I've dropped a couple of calls but no more than my other 3G phones. I usually leave 3G off on my iPhone, though, and I haven't dropped a call with EDGE, yet.

ETA: If it wasn't obvious in my previous post, I was being facetious.

heard it costs like $50 per call to 911

is this true?

this is why i never call 911 for people

So if the call drops, call them back. doesn't take much time to dial 911 and get through.

yes and no. old phones can call for free, but when i called 911, i had a $1.75 charge on my AT&T bill.

You shouldn't have been charged and if you were you should have disputed it with AT&T. I believe cellular providers are not allowed to charge for 911 calls. I could be wrong though.

if you call 1-900-911 you can have emergency phone sex. 91.1 cents per min. other toll fees may apply. no one under 18.

No, any phone should be able to call for free, even without a sim card.
Not quite. Yes, any phone must be capable of connecting to a 911 dispatch center for free, but a fee can be added onto your monthly bill after the fact. In other words, payment cannot be a requirement to call, but they can charge you a fee afterwards.

In fact, Ventura county officials recently considered a bill that would require a $50 per call fee for 911 services, but it was significantly lowered to about $15, with a free pass for the first call, and in addition, exemptions for those calling on behalf of someone else; likewise, residents will have an option to instead pay a monthly $1.50.

However, this is far from the normal standard of 911 fees.

Despite these fees, one should never be hesitant to make the call; if someone needs help, call immediately, and the fees can be dealt with later.

Thank your government for the outsourcing to private corporations lobbying

Yep, 911 is now officially a holding of the 7-11 Corp. Oddly, if you dial 711, it's a free call, and you can order a Slurpee delivered...maybe you could use that to put out the fire.

Absolutely not. It varies from district to district, but generally it's less than $1.

If anyone ever needs your help, don't hesitate to call.

meh... if it's going to cost me a dollar, I'll just look the other way

:D
