Call forwarding

I travel and usually change SIM card in my iPhone.
I am wondering if the call forward function forwards calls to the phone or to the SIM card.
What I mean is the following. I am in Canada and call forward to my home phone. I land in China and change the SIM card to a Chinese SIM card. Are the calls to my Canadian number still forwarded? Can I still get calls to my phone now that it has a Chinese SIM card or are the calls to my Chinese numbers forwarded to my home phone?
