Calls that leave voicemails also show notification in recent calls?

The one thing I find annoying about the iphone is that calls that leave voicemails also show up in your notification as missed calls, so you need to go to both places to get the notification number to disappear. Or, on the icon screen, one call will cause a 2 on your phone icon since it counts once as a voicemail and once as a missed call. Doesn't make any sense to me. Any way to stop the missed call notification for calls that leave voicemails?
