i have a series of questions pertaining to camcorders, all of which i want to cover in this single thread. basically i need a perfect camcorder in time for the holidays, so i can edit on my imac, and eventually burn on dvd for distribution to family members who own standard-def tvs. so when replying, please specify which question # you are answering:

1. hi-def camcorders. stupid question: do i need an hdtv?? and/or can i edit it on my computer for viewing on standard-def tv's?

2. i really want a hard-drive or flash camcorder. i know jvc requires their proprietary software in order to edit the footage (i could stand corrected). do the sony and samsungs also follow this same practice? or will i be able to use any software i choose (premiere, final cut, etc)?

3. i will be purchasing from futureshop or best buy, so any suggestions on specific models will be appreciated.

1. Yes, works fine on Mac, transfer to DVD with iDVD and plays find on SD TV
2. They record in AVCHD format which can be read by iMovie 08 and FEC 4
3. I've got a Sony HDR-SR5, which I think is a cracking camera.
