Got the camera kit for iPad and it's amazing with the iPhone. *I plugged in the iPhone and can import pics and video. *Once imported there is a new button labeled "places". It shows on a map where all the places I took pics are at. *I didn't realize that the iPhone pics are geotagged!

2nd gen and later are.

The first gen iPhone didn't have GPS onboard.

Don't know about iPhone, but it doesn't work with 3rd gen iPod Touch. Tried both plugs and got a message that the iPod doesn't support them.

Apple says iPhone 3G is not supported with this kit at all, so looks like you need 3GS to use the geotagging function.

I think you might misunderstand. I plugged the iPhone into my iPad using the standard data USB cable and the USB connector from the camera kit. It instantly opens Photo on the iPad and let's me import stuff.
