I wonder if Apple could make a lot of people happy and want to upgrade if the iPhone 17 Camera Control also supported Touch ID.

If you could unlock the phone just by resting your finger on it, that could be interesting…

Interesting indeed. Though, it might make all of the case manufactures go back to the dreaded "cutout" instead of the passthrough Camera Control sensor.

I didn’t even know that there were cases with Camera Control passthrough. That sounds cool.

Yup, all of the official Apple cases have it, as well as a growing number of third party cases:

Interesting idea but I suspect it would require increasing the spatial resolution of the camera controller by several times (4X, 10X, ?) and that would be an additional expense .

I can’t see apple going back to a less secure authentication method. I can just picture the headlines about Apple deliberately making iPhone security worse.

How would it be worse? You'd still have Face ID if that's what you want to use. Many Android phones allow both biometrics. Imagine if you could make things require Face ID and Touch ID simultaneously for an extra layer of security.

If people choose Touch ID over Face ID then their security is worse. So you don’t give them the option of Touch ID and instead just give them the more secure Face ID.

Do people pick up and start using their phones in landscape? It’s pretty awkward place for Touch ID. Makes sense for iPad, not for iPhone.

Touch id is painful to use. My notification content is not displayed when locked but Face ID shows content. I can’t imaging authenticating with Touch ID. Apple Pay is messy with Touch ID.

I think a very small to zero chance of this. Apple is stubborn and considering they name it “Camera Control” it won’t have dual functionality. Not to mention the horrendous placement of it which integrating Touch ID which would make unlocking a hassle. I personally think if Touch ID does return it’ll be in the form of under-display.

Or in the power button.
