TLDR: Kind of a rant / whining, but whatever materials are used that cover iphone cameras, they are poor quality, at least on the iphone 13 model. Any tips for protecting the cameras are welcome.

////

I wonder if there is any way to protect the camera glass covers, especially when every case has a huge cutout that offers no protection for the cameras. My phone fell and the longer I wait to get a replacement, and re-look at how this glass (or plastic maybe, or some blend) broke, it just gets very discouraging not just for my own device and model, but to read Apple’s constant marketing that brags that their materials used are so strong and good quality, when in reality they fracture easily. And according to the in-store technician they won’t / can’t replace just the camera, they have to just replace the whole phone ($400 plus tax). Meanwhile every year, Apple’s page for each new model uses word choice about high build quality but having seen what this glass looks like when broken up close, it seems like such empty words — gorilla glass, sapphire, aerospace-grade, etc. — that seem to have little basis in reality.

So that leads me to think what likelihood is there that in reality, the models each year after my iphone 13 have any more protection for the cameras? And even if I get some super-bulky Otterbox case, there’s no protection for the most protruding and most vulnerable element…

so perhaps getting Apple Care (which I did but it expired at two years) AND making sure it gets renewed and never expires is the best, or only, solution.

Glass is glass. It's clear your phone took a catastrophic hit. The quality of the glass is fine.

There are cases with sliding camera covers.

Yes, “glass is glass,” okay… thanks for that.

And yes I have looked at camera covers, maybe something like this is the next step… $70 plus tax but perhaps it would have saved money in the long run.

At the end of the day, it's a block of glass.

Yes, Apple may pretend it's unbreakable and you can make a Hollywood film using iPhone. In reality, you'll want a good case. You'll need studio lighting, jigs, and microphones to make a movie.

Apple's cases are for show only. They look nice, but if you want any real protection, get a case with at least two layers - hard and soft - just like a bike helmet.
