I'm thinking of getting an iPad for a family member, and they are cheaper in the US than where I live. I'm going to the US in about a month so could get one while I'm there. However, I''m a bit unclear on the 3G issue. On the apple web site, it says this:

When you travel internationally, you can use a micro-SIM card from a local carrier.

Should I take this to mean that you can't use a foreign sim card while in the US? Or will any foreign provider with roaming services do?

Or to put it more simply: is the type of sim card used restricted in any way?

Yes, you can buy iPad in USA and use in UK.
I have bought iPad2 in USA and used with 3 Sim in UK.
Buy AT&T iPad.
If your UK sim card allows roaming, it will work in USA.

Why do you specify the AT&T iPad. I thought the 3rd generation iPad was the same for travelers in terms of sim capability. What is the advantage in the AT&T one?
