Just curious can the ipad 1 or 2 work as a iphone. Im talking specifically the one with 3g if i add my iphone 4 sim to it. Thinking of selling my old 3gs and putting the money toward a ipad 2 3g or ipad1 3g.

has anyone ever tried this ?

Confused
- A SIM card is not all that is needed for it to make phone calls.
- How can an iPad become an iPhone 4?
- Why would you want to try and convert and iPad into a phone?
- How would you use it?

No it's not possible. The iPad was never designed to be used as a phone and does not have the necessary technology. The closest it comes to voice communication is FaceTime and Skype.

in theory yes, but you would be left with using it on speakerphone or with headset wired or bluetooth.

And to Saving107, no a simcard is not all that is needed to make phonecalls, but the iPad and the iPad 2 hass all the hardware that is needed, the 3G (and cdma) versions have all the hardware needed, but as off software, its blocked not to.

Correct, but you could use Skype and Google Voice.

Skype & Google Voice

So he can sell his 3GS and put the money towards an iPad2.

- How would you use it?
iPhone headphones or BT ear piece.

thanks it's nice when people are helpful on this forum...

Well I don't think you can just use your ATT phone plan by popping in a SIM because not only is there a phone app, but ATT can sense which device is on their network. So assuming you don't mind going to Skype or GV you should be able to work around it.

Beyond that, you can always get a dirt cheap cell phone and use that for voice and get your iOS jollies with your iPad.

Option 1: u could think about whatsapp, ping, beejive and so on as well as skype to replace ur phone function as well as google voice if u r in america.
Option 2: jailbreak ipad 2 work as a phone no idea how that works or if that even exist - maybe someone else could help u with.
Option 3: pick a smaller storage ipad and keep ur iphone running b/c its always better to use a phone for a phone. just my opinon

I use an app called Whistle for making calls on my WiFi iPad2. Calls are free for U.S. Domestic calls only. And yes, unless you use a BT headset or headphone, voice are done via speakerphone
