Dear Community,

I have an Apple TV 4K hooked up to my TV and it seems like while I was at work, there has been a power outage in my flat. When I came home, the light of my Apple TV was glowing (as if it was on), but when I switched on the TV, the HDMI of the Apple TV did not detect any signal and the Apple TV was not responding to any regular commands on the remote. I then did a restart of the Apple TV by pressing "Menu" and "Home" until the light flashed and after the restart, everything seemed to work fine.

However, I am wondering: Is a restart something normal you "can do", like restarting a phone or a laptop, or is it something that should worry me, like a hard reset?

Thanks for your help!

Thanks, both of you, that's reassuring.

However, I do not know which state it was actually in before the restart, as the light was steadily glowing but there was no signal. Could the outage have done some damage? Or should it be fine if it does work now?

Restarts are perfectly fine, and probably good to do every once in a while.

I restart my ATVs all the time, almost always to try to fix the tvOS bugs.

Usually if it's updating the light flashes on and off to my knowledge.

I have had this exact situation happen about once every two week on my ATV4 (HD) ever since it updated to tvOS 14.

The only way I have found to correct it is to unplug the power and plug it back in. Holding Menu and Home doesn't for on my ATV4 for some reason.

That's strange. However, this probably means that "exiting" this "glowing light/no signal"-state, either via Menu+Home or via unplugging, is safe to do, right?
