Can a US iPhone been used with a legitimate O2 contract in the UK?

I bought an iPhone from the US when it first came out, and have had more problems using it than the average unlocker seems to have had. I've had enough.
Id like to take out an O2 contract, if i can get enough money to buy out my vodafone contract, but that won't leave me much to buy a new iPhone (although 16GB would be great), can I just use my US iPhone? Or would I still have to unlock it for it to work on O2?
