can AirTags help absent-minded folks who leave bags in taxis or restaurants?

In some way yes, but keep in mind that it takes like 30m of distance before the AirTag notice you forgot something. For a bag in a restaurant it’s not an issue as you can come back, but your taxi will be far from you when you will receive the notification
True, but you could still call the Taxi company and report your bag as missing - if you paid with your card, they should be able to track the transaction to the driver and notify them of your bag in the back seat (in an ideal scenario)
