Hi,
I share an external FW disk between two macs (desktop and mbp). This drive is hooked up to the desktop mac and share it via ethernet and a router.
So far so good.
Thing is that the desktop is not always in use and therefore only powered on to make the FW drive accessible to my mbp. Connecting it to my mbp directly instead of the desktop creates the problem in the opposite direction. My macbook frequently is on route, and then the desktop is then used by a colleague.
I wondered if there was a better way to share this external drive (self powered by the way, its a LaCie) WITHOUT having two computers powered on all the time.
There are two FW ports on the back of the drive, but i heard that connecting one drive to two computers simultaneously is not a good thing? I know a NAS device or an ethernet disk are viable options but if there's a way without the need to invest more i would prefer that. The drive itself functions just fine.
