Can an Imac be used as a external display?

I am probably going to be getting a laptop for my next computer to replace a 20' sep 07 imac.
I was wondering if I could use the imac's display as an external laptop display.
I know that it is possible to use it as an external hard drive, but not a display.
Does anyone know if this would be possible?
I'd assume I'd need to connect them with the correct dvi-or whatever they are cables.

The latest 27" ones can.

27-inch models also support input from external DisplayPort sources (adapters sold separately).

It looks like a good program, but it's a pity it's not free Anyway I doubt $20 will be hard to find. I thought there would be a program somewhere for this kind of problem.


And as I stated in my original post, this is a sept 07 imac, not a 27' new one...

Seems like kind of a waste. If your current iMac works, why don't you sell it and use the money to buy a nice, new, bigger monitor? You'll get all the benefits and you'll save money on the electric bill.
