Can an iPhone be onlocked more than once?

I just bought an iPhone and I'd like to use t-mobile but I also want to be able to update my phone when apple puts out new updates. I've read that it will be locked again if you update after it's been unlocked. So, can it be unlocked more than once? Will I loose info?
