I THINK the answer is no? But thought I'd ask if I could get a second iPhone to basically use as an iPad and while on the same wifi network place/receive calls through the iPhone with service, as you can with Macintosh and iPad.

If I were doing this, I'd probably get a 16 Plus, maybe a 17 Pro Max, for their larger screens.

Nope. It won’t allow you to make calls. I also tried calling just now and my spare iPhone didn’t ring. Even replying to SMS via the primary number is blocked.

Too bad Apple doesn’t make the iPod touch now. Those made for pretty good secondary wifi-based “iPhones”.

Thanks! I'm hoping an iPad mini or Air can fill in okay for phone calls/sound okay on speakerphone. We shall see, I guess!

I do that all the time on my iPad (usually the mini nowadays). Works fine. I believe the iPads have better speakers than iPhones.
That's awesome! Do the microphones sound good? I mostly use my iPhones in speakerphone mode, do these newer ipads work as well?

I've been super torn between a mini and air...feel somewhat stupid getting a mini that's less powerful, maybe not good (for me) for like graphic novels, lacks stage manager, and would be worse propped up streaming games or shows...BUT the smaller size seems way more practical for use as a phone, which is one of the big reasons I'm getting it. I've been walking around with my dead Air 2 trying to decide if it's too big and heavy, and...kinda.

I love that either way I can get purple lol, love Apple's pastels! Wish their Macbooks and Pro phones/iPads had the fun colors

I don't know how the quality of the mic is but so far I haven't had any complaints from the folks on the other end of the line.
Thanks again! It was painful deleting the Air out of my cart (m3! Big screen! Smart Connector!) buuuuuut I think the Mini will (hopefully) be a better "phone" for me, and hey, it's bigger than my iPhone 13 that I've been using for this!
